Source is an assessment of the current media landscape in America. Beginning with a curiosity about pirate radio (illegal AM or FM broadcasting) and the issues surrounding it, I realized that it is almost impossible to fully understand one medium without consider-ing it within the context of the communications matrix as a whole. The fundamental human need to send and receive transmissions is facilitated by the ever-expanding network of digital technology. As new mediums and technologies appear, conflicts accompany them. Concerns over ownership, control, and freedom of speech arise when people feel that their means of communication are not fully democratic. My goal is to interpret the current state of telecommunications in a world where even something as sovereign as the internet is subject to restrictions and corporate control.
